Lean and Hungry Theater presents Richard III
Richard III is one of Shakespeare's most recognizable anti-heroes, scheming and manipulating his way into power at the expense of enemies and loved ones alike. This production of RIchard III is set against the backdrop of Japan's Genpei War, circa 1185, and focuses exclusively on Richards story arc. The production features one vocal chorus, performing Shakespeare's words into microphones, and a second physical chorus devoted to bunraku puppetry. All actors involved will also create live foley.
Lean and Hungry Theater has an 11 year track record of creating audio adaptations of the classics, set in more accessible locations. This year, we continue that trend with Richard III, which we are setting in Japan, circa 1185, set against the backdrop of the Genpei War. Bunraku puppetry has not been seen on a DC stage in over 15 years: we are delighted and thrilled to bring this beautiful art form to DC audiences.
At Lean and Hungry Theater, we believe that narratives like Richard III transcend time and place. Our job, as storytellers, is to present that narrative in ways that speak to our wide-ranging and diverse audience.
